Ride of the Valkyries of Wägner
The Ride of the Valkyries is the name that refers to the third act of the Valkyrie, the second opera of the tetralogy The Ring of the Nibelung by the German Romantic composer Richard Wagner. Due to the very large duration of the movement, even the whole opera, this time I am just going to comment that little fragment, as is most known. Something that caught my attention is that because of its long duration is very difficult to find a recording of opera, the easy thing is to find an only instrumental recording.
In the opera theater it lasts eight minutes, begins in the prelude to act successively adding instruments to the accompaniment until the curtain rises and the peak of a mountain which brought together four of the eight Valkyrie sisters of Brünnhilde is to prepare the transport of fallen heroes to Valhalla. As bind the other four, the orchestra represents the familiar melody, while on her, the Valkyries greet each other and sing their battle cry. Brünnhilde (Brynhildr) in the Poetic Edda, is the Valkyrie who was locked in a tower because of Odin and Sigurd rescued her and promised to marry her, but due to a love potion he married Gudrun and Brynhild revenged by killing him, after which not supporting the pain, committed suicide.
Wagner's music is very powerful. It is absolutely clear that belongs to romanticism, such a powerful music can only belong to that movement. That tension that causes hearing the Ride, imagining the Valkyries riding through the sky to the rhythm of the trumpets of war, just wonderful.
Wilhelm Richard Wagner was born in Leipzig in
1813, in whose University
studied philosophy, of parents with theatrical and philosophical interests.
Wagner was one of the most controversial musicians, as it is mixed philosopher,
poet, revolutionary, musician, bourgeois, feisty and idealistic. The essence of
his thought is the synthesis of all the arts in an indissoluble whole, based on
the Greek tragedy. The issues are taken from Germanic myths and legends, and
based on the ideas and philosophical theories of Schopenhauer. The role of the
orchestra is external commentator feelings and attitudes of the characters
The Romanticism breaks with the Neoclassical and the figure of a new individual who seeks balance between reason and sentiment appears. It goes roughly from the mid-XVIII century to the mid-XIX century. Faced with the image of an orderly nature dominated by the neoclassical man, Romanticism offers a new vision where man feels tiny to the immeasurable nature. The Germans called this movement as the Sturm und Drang (Storm and Impetu).
In conclusion, the Ride of the Valkyries, and the whole cycle Nibelung, is a masterpiece of music, is impressive for its technical quality, its originality, so intelligent as Wagner was and the duration. It is an artwork that would be amazing to hear the whole opera, but unfortunately, it is difficult to find a recording. Wagner is a master.
